It’s been 1 year this month since I started learning piano and it’s been an amazing and somewhat life changing experience! You may think life changing is a little over the top… but for me it really is true, as this September I will become a full-time music student at University and I’m beyond excited for that!

I decided to make my own 1 year progress video, after watching so many myself before finally committing to purchasing my own digital piano. Who knows, maybe if it wasn’t for those videos I wouldn’t have ever taken that first step, which is crazy to think looking back now! That’s why I decided it was important for me to record these clips and make a video, in hopes of motivating someone else to take up an instrument, giving it there all and seeing where they can go with it too.

Up until month 8 I used Jane’s piano tutorials to learn 99% of the music I learnt. She is a retired math teacher and dedicates her free time to playing through requested pieces by viewers every single day! Mostly all classical pieces have a tutorial and many popular video game, anime, TV shows and movie compositions can be found on her channel. If you really want to learn but can’t afford a teacher, I think this would be your best option.
Jane’s channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCidvz_O5zdX7z2mr4zkeL2g

There are a few pieces I learnt on my own and for lessons which I didn’t put in the video due to time/not recording, so below is a more detailed breakdown of what was happening every month:

Month 1:
-Random beginner piano tutorials and books (stopped trying to read music and started to learn music through online tutorials)
-Gary Jules – Mad World
-Song of storms from The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time – Koji Kondo

Month 4:
-Yiruma – River Flows in You
-Ed Sheeran – Shape of You
-Ludovico Einaudi – Una Mattina
(Started getting lessons at the end of this month)

Month 5:
-Claude Debussy – Clair De Lune

Month 6:
-Scott Joplin – Maple Leaf Rag

Month 7:
-Chopin – Nocturne #2 in Eb major (op9 no2)
-Sadness and Sorrow from Naruto – Toshio Masuda

Month 8:
-Various classical pieces from the book ‘Classics to Moderns #2
-Chopin – Waltz in A minor B.150 (Op Posth)
(Stopped learning music through online tutorials and committed to reading music. Everything past this month I learnt by reading)

PIANO CHORDS: The ULTIMATE Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners [EASY VERSION]

Get the Free PDF’s and Course here: http://www.bestpianoclass.com/signup

What’s up my piano friends! Today we’re going over the ULTIMATE guide to chords for piano beginners. Now, this is the EASY version. I’m going to simplify this mofo as much as humanly possible.

First I’m going to give you some copy-and-paste formulas for quickly figuring out Major and Minor chords. I call it the BOOM method (you’ll see what I mean in the video…)

Next we’re going to go over some quick-and-easy cheat sheets to help you find and play chords faster than if you used the formula alone. These are a huge time saver. PLUS you can print these off, tape them to your mirror, and study your chords every time you brush your teeth (hows that for passive learning! 😉

Next we’re going to simplify Chord Inversions for ya. And lastly we’re going to be learning an actual song from SCRATCH (“All of Me” by John Legend if you were wondering!)

We’re going to learn the song withOUT downloading any sheet music, or even using our ear. Just basic chords. You’ll see what I mean in the video. Oh, and you can find all the info in some free online resources.

Anyway, I’m hoping to be VERY comprehensive with this video. I want this to be the LAST time you have to go looking up “how to play piano chords” on YouTube.

Oh, and by the way make sure you’re paying attention… there’s going to be a quiz at the end to test your knowledge 😉

Download the cheat sheets to get started:

CHEAT SHEET INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Go here: http://www.bestpianoclass.com/signup
2. Sign Up with your name and email (yes, it’s really free lol)

A simple and efficient method to construct ANY major & minor chord on the piano.

Sign up for MORE awesome content at http://www.pianopig.com

In this piano tutorial, we look at an easy method to build major and minor chords. The idea is to count the notes in half-steps. Doing this allows us to count the notes between each note.

For example, a major chord plays the root note, skips 3 notes, plays the next note, skips 2 notes and plays the next note. So the first skip is 3 and the second skip is 2. Therefore we can call major chords “3-2” chords. This applies to ALL major chords.

To construct a minor chord we need to reverse this, so we need to play a “2-3” chord. An easy way to remember this is because the first skip of the minor chord is small, and minor & small can mean a similar thing.

A little about me:

Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his YouTube channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

How To Read Notes (Beginner Piano Lesson)

Piano for beginners No Comments »

Sight-Reading Made Simple (FREE 4-Lesson Course):

Once you’re done this one and want to learn about sharps and flats, head here: ►https://youtu.be/Bh4YYNI-bT0

Sight-reading has never come easily to me. I’ve struggled with it from the beginning. At one point in my early piano years, I had to repeat an entire level because my teacher realized I’d learned nothing. I was hearing her demonstrate the song and then playing from memory, never actually knowing how to read the notes!

Along the way, I’ve learned some things that have made sight-reading much easier for me, which I’ll share in this lesson. As you watch, keep in mind that some people will naturally find sight-reading easier than others. Those of us with strong ears and the natural ability to play without music tend to struggle the most when it comes to reading notation. The reverse is also true for those who are strong sight-readers. Strong sight-readers will often have trouble playing by ear. The important thing to keep in mind is that we all have our own unique strengths and weaknesses and we need to celebrate both.

Enjoy the lesson!

How to Learn New Tunes (Autumn Leaves) │ Jazz Piano Lesson #32

Learn jazz piano No Comments »

My original idea was to share this music sheet with you for free, but I had to take it down due to copyright infringement. (Yep, the melody of Autumn Leaves is not old enough just to share it freely.) Luckily, I got some help and now I could re-publish it again through musicnotes.com.

Sheet Music: http://mnot.es/2sFHu7m

About this lesson:

1. Most of the time I follow what is written, but still, you might find some differences here and there.

2. These are the basic steps I follow whenever I learn a new standard. You will benefit a lot from going through these steps too.

3. BEFORE STEP 1: Listen to this song a lot and to try to learn it by ear. (Lyrics too)

4. I am going to upload 6 different arrangements for Autumn Leaves + impro and stuff. (You already heard two of the arrangement at the beginning of this video)
Basically you will get a Complete Autumn Leaves Workout. Very soon. Stay tuned.

About “faking jazz”

Please, if you have the time check out “Universal Mind of Bill Evans”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwXAqIaUahI

Here is a teaser: “People tend to approximate the product rather than attacking it in a realistic, true way at any elementary level — regardless of how elementary — but it must be entirely true and entirely real and entirely accurate. hey would rather approximate the entire problem than to take a small part of it and be real and true about it. To approximate the whole thing in a vague way gives you a feeling that you’ve more or less touched the thing, but in this way you just lead yourself toward confusion and ultimately you’re going to get so confused that you’ll never find your way out.”

Piano Chords: The Basics

Piano Learning No Comments »

Chords are built from scales. A triad is the most simple type of chord, it consists of 3 notes. To construct a triad you must take the 1st, 3rd and 5th. You could think of it as playing the root note, skipping the next note of the scale and playing the next one. Again, skip the following note and play the next one. These three notes create a triad. You can get major triads as well as minor triads (and more!).

You can also play these chords in different inversions. To do this, move whichever note is on the bottom of the chord to the top.

Simple PIANO EXERCISES for Advanced JAZZ IMPROVISATION

Learn jazz piano No Comments »

Fundamental, simple and very powerful right hand modal jazz piano exercises. We take advantages of the physiology of the hand using primarily the 3 first fingers making a strong, simple and ‘fast moving’ foundation to be used when playing a jazz piano solo.

We reuse the same unique 3 finger hand grip (lick) to play the pentatonic scale and all the 7 church modes. Furthermore we use the hand grip to play chromatic scale and off scale.

Having done the groundwork we expand the 3 finger hand grip also using the 4. and 5. finger.

The main idea in this lesson is to make great sound – but in a simple manner. We will avoid overthinking when playing a solo. We will use simple but powerful tools. The tools shall not make things complicated, instead they shall free our mind. Then we can use our energy on expression and feelings bringing forward the soul of music.

I’m referring to the following videos from NewJazz:
