Let’s talk sus chords! These little gems are awesome piano chords and provide a very modern sound.

In this piano tutorial, we talk about sus chords, sus4 & sus2. Sus is short for suspended and they are neither major or minor. If you ever see a ‘sus’ with no number, this is normally referring to a sus4.

To play a sus chord you have to omit the 3rd and replace it with either the 2nd or 4th.

Suspended chords are unresolved chords, meaning they want to go somewhere else for a resolution. There are many ways to resolve these chords, but some the most common ways are to either resolve down to the 5th below, or just lower/raise the 2nd/4th back to the 3rd.

If you have any questions, just leave a comment below!

Note: I was already a musician when I started the piano, I have been playing guitar since the age of 8 and electronic music since the age of 15.
For those who discover me with this video, my progress can seem very fast but they are logical in regards of my journey. I spent thousands of hours composing music, listening to it, and I already had a sense of rhythm and harmony because of it. The piano is very visual, so progress quickly arrived, especially since I spent a lot of time there (it was my number 1 priority during this year !)
I invite people who discover me with this video to go see what I have been doing for several years on my youtube channel and my soundcloud, to better understand my journey.

Good viewing 🙂

Starting playing the piano changed my life. After classes, I went home and instead of watching Netflix I chose to practice the piano, and somehow it helped me to get more energy, feeling productive and focus. I believe that what we learn always helps us in other areas of life.

I started by practicing famous loops from classic house music, because I listen to a lot of it, and I wanted to play it in live situation with my drumbox. I am also really interested in jazz and classic music too, and after practicing those simple loops I decided to get to more complex songs by playing them.

I got into music theory, just enough to understand what I play (especially in jazz music), why it sounds like this and how I can shape my own voicings.

Improvisation – Jazz Piano Lessons – Sounds Good at Slow Tempo

Improvisation – Jazz Piano Lessons – Sounds Good at Slow Tempo

Do your fingers seem to only have one speed—slow?
Want something bluesy you can play slowly and still sound great?

Take some piano lessons from Scott Houston “The Piano Guy.” In this video, Scott shows you how to use a 12 measure pattern to create a great bluesy sound that sounds great played slowly.

The example for these piano lessons are taught in the key of C two octaves down from Middle C.

The order to play the chords follows the 12 measure pattern:
C-C-C-C-F-F-C-C-G-F-C-C

Frequently you will see the C7, F7, G7 played, but today we are going to make it even simpler and use a variation of the C, F and G Chords for your left hand part.

We will just be using the two outside notes (removing the middle note of the triad) of the chords for this pattern.

C = C,E,G: We will play the C & G.
F = F,A,C: We will play just the F & C.
G = G,B,D: We will play the G & D.

After playing the two outside notes, we will keep the pinkie on the root but will then move the thumb up one step and play that. So the pattern will look like this:

1. C & G and C & A
2. C & G and C & A
3. C & G and C & A
4. C & G and C & A
5. F & C and F & D
6. F & C and F & D
7. C & G and C & A
8. C & G and C & A
9. G & D and G & E
10. F & C and F & D
11. C & G and C & A
12. C & G and C & A

Another way to look at it is:

C & G and C & A (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 4
F & C and F & D (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 2
C & G and C & A (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 2
G & D and G & E (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 1
F & C and F & D (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 1
C & G and C & A (playing quarter notes 4 times= 1 measure) X 2

Then repeat over and over again! Added bonus—at the end of each 12 measure pattern before you go back up to the top, you can play a G augmented (G aug) F, B, D# in your right hand

Practice playing the left hand pattern solely until you get to the point that you can play it pretty easily without having to think too hard or until your hand has that muscle memory.

Once you get the left hand pattern down, you are ready to tackle the right hand part. With your right hand, you will be improvising. Just stick to all the white notes with the exception of the Bb. If you want to, you can also include the Eb. If you stick to playing only those keys you will never hit a clam.

The key is to keep your pattern in the left hand playing slowly and consistently at the same tempo.

Have fun with this slow blues pattern. It is a great chance to practice your improvising!

Scott’s life goal is to help you learn to play piano through piano lessons that you can take anywhere and at any time to get you started having some fun at a piano or keyboard as quickly as possible.

Scott Houston is the host of The Piano Guy television series on Public Television and has taught hundreds of thousands of folks like yourself, how to have some fun on their piano or keyboard. He wants to help you get there too—as quickly as possible.

Eight killer tips to improve your piano learning

My book: http://www.billspianopages.com/how-to-really

http://fb.me/billhiltonpiano

Tutorial on ear training: http://youtu.be/EJNH5nSEEIo
Piano for absolute beginners series (reading music): http://goo.gl/5UqKP2

This tutorial focusses on eight tips that will help you learn the piano, especially if you’re teaching yourself. If you’re learning to play it’s all too easy to get focussed on the very narrow activity of learning particular pieces or scales, and ignore wider musicianship skills that will actually help you become a better pianist, faster.

Much of this is about internalising key skills, like aural skills, knowledge of harmony and intervals. There are fairly simple things you can do to do those things, such as branching out beyond the piano music you’re learning from, singing, watching other people play, working things out on the piano, writing your own basic compositions and more.
