Alright here’s an easy jazz piano progression for beginners. And when I say I bet you a million dollars you could play it, I mean it! As long as you follow the exact steps I outline in the video.
It’s basically a specific chord progression that LOOKS a lot harder than it is to play, but once you get the hang of it, it’s VERY easy to improv over, even if you’re a beginner.
And yes, this is somewhat of a “piano trick”. In other words, I’m not teaching the in-depth theory behind it, but it’s a great intro into Jazz and Improvising. This is the second tutorial in my series on jazz piano for absolute beginners. In this lesson we build on what we learned in the first tutorial, using the C major pentatonic scale and two notes from the C blues scale to improvise over two, and then three, chords in the left hand.
I also introduce shell chords – incredibly useful for jazz piano – and talk about some of the underlying music theory it’s useful for you to know, especially if you’re relatively new to the piano or just coming back to the instrument.
Finally, I talk about the mental processes involved in jazz piano improvisation (and, in fact, in most forms of improvisation, musical and otherwise), and how skilled pianists and other improvisers have a mental toolkit from which they build their improvisations. This all depends on developing a “flow state”. The best jazz pianists have the biggest and best-practised toolkits and the best flow.

In this lesson I show you 3 easy jazz chords that all jazz beginner piano players should know!
They include a minor 11, a minor 7 flat 5, and an altered dominant. If the chord names sound like nonsense to you don’t worry because you don’t really need to understand them to be able to play them…. learn the theory later!
With these 3 chords we can construct what is known as a ‘minor II-V-I’ and this sounds awesome! Practice the chords in different keys to get familiar with them and try to incorporate them into your own playing.

These 4 exercises are fantastic for anyone wanting to improve their speed, dexterity, hand independence, and control.
These are geared towards beginners, but they can be used by any level as a great way to ‘wake up’ the fingers and develop muscle memory.
Here are the four exercises and their timecodes:
1. The Five Finger Sale – 0:20
This exercise uses the five finger scale to work on control and hand independence. Start slow, and make sure that you are always in control of the notes you are playing.
To make it more difficult, you can try playing one hand smoothly (legato) and the other hand sharply (staccato). To make it even MORE difficult try it with each hand playing a different length note.
2. The Contrary Motion Scale – 3:10
This scale sounds fancy, but it’s not as hard as it sounds. Start with both thumbs on Middle C. Then play the C scale UP with your right hand and DOWN with your left.
When you’re comfortable, start experimenting with dynamics, to control the volume.
3. The Solid Claw – 4:55
This is called the claw because we make a claw shape with our hand, and use our 1, 3 and 5 fingers to play a chord. Once you can play a chord, work your way up the keyboard to play a chord on each note, and come back down again.
If this is too difficult, you can take out the middle finger for now, and just use the top and bottom notes.
4. The Broken Claw – 6:19
This is very similar to the Solid Claw, except instead of playing the notes as chords, we are going to play each one separately. This exercise can be very challenging, so make sure you take it slow.
These lessons vary in difficulty, so if you can’t do them all, that’s ok! Work on what you can do, and practice to get better. If you can do them all, that’s great! Work to get them faster, and check out some of our more advanced exercises on our channel.

In this Jazz Piano Tutorial we will be on how to play Jazz Piano – from beginner to advanced.
In this lesson I try to answer the questions of ‘How to Play Jazz Piano.’ This is quite a difficult question to answer because Jazz is a very fluid and broad genre. There is no ‘right’ way to play Jazz. Consequently, it’s often quite difficult to create a prescriptive series of steps which you must follow in order to be able to play Jazz. The whole point of Jazz is that the musician is just as involved in the composition of a song as the composer. This is why Jazz musicians generally use ‘lead sheets’ rather than ‘sheet music’. Lead sheets intentionally only give you the skeleton of the song (just the basic melody and chords) and force you to make up the rest. It’s up to the musician to take this basic information and turn it into a fully-fledged performance. Nevertheless, when you are just beginning to learn to play Jazz, you’re naturally looking for some guidance about what to play and how to play.
