3 Easy R&B Chord Progressions

Piano Learning No Comments »

I’m finally breaking down some easy to learn R&B chord progressions. These progressions are great for music producers and anyone trying to get better at playing R&B music. Let me know if you all want more content like this. Thanks for watching!

If you love chords and want to get better, then check out our free Chord Hack series here:

If you’re playing or writing a song, how do you know what chords will fit together in a chord progression to sound good?

If I’m playing C-G-Am-F, can I play a D Major chord?

It turns out there are actually some really useful ways to know what chords will work together. It’s not a strict rule, but more of a starting point.

They’re called Diatonic Chords.

Now I have a confession to make. I’ve been playing the piano since I was nine-years-old. But I only learned about diatonic chords THIS YEAR!

I figured if I didn’t know what they were for so long, then chances are other people might not either.

It turns out diatonic chords is just a fancy name for something SUPER SIMPLE! But it’s really useful for understanding different keys and how to play chords and songs in those keys.

Put simply, diatonic chords are all the chords that naturally occur inside a certain key. They only use the notes found within that key (or scale).

Let’s take C Major as an example. C Major has only white keys. So every chord you play in the key of C will have only white keys. A C will be C-E-G – easy right? Then up a note will be D-F-A, making it a D minor. So D minor is a diatonic chord of C. You can then work your way up the scale, still only playing white notes.

Check out the timecodes for a breakdown of the lesson!

What are diatonic chords? – 0:48

How is this useful? – 2:15

Try it in another key – 2:36

Practice tips – 3:48

What’s up my piano friends! Today we’re going over the ULTIMATE guide to chords for piano beginners. Now, this is the EASY version. I’m going to simplify this mofo as much as humanly possible.

First I’m going to give you some copy-and-paste formulas for quickly figuring out Major and Minor chords. I call it the BOOM method (you’ll see what I mean in the video…)

Next we’re going to go over some quick-and-easy cheat sheets to help you find and play chords faster than if you used the formula alone. These are a huge time saver. PLUS you can print these off, tape them to your mirror, and study your chords every time you brush your teeth (hows that for passive learning! 😉

Next we’re going to simplify Chord Inversions for ya. And lastly we’re going to be learning an actual song from SCRATCH (“All of Me” by John Legend if you were wondering!)

We’re going to learn the song withOUT downloading any sheet music, or even using our ear. Just basic chords. You’ll see what I mean in the video. Oh, and you can find all the info in some free online resources.

Anyway, I’m hoping to be VERY comprehensive with this video. I want this to be the LAST time you have to go looking up “how to play piano chords” on YouTube.

Oh, and by the way make sure you’re paying attention… there’s going to be a quiz at the end to test your knowledge 😉

Download the cheat sheets to get started:

A simple and efficient method to construct ANY major & minor chord on the piano.

In this piano tutorial, we look at an easy method to build major and minor chords. The idea is to count the notes in half-steps. Doing this allows us to count the notes between each note.

For example, a major chord plays the root note, skips 3 notes, plays the next note, skips 2 notes and plays the next note. So the first skip is 3 and the second skip is 2. Therefore we can call major chords “3-2” chords. This applies to ALL major chords.

To construct a minor chord we need to reverse this, so we need to play a “2-3” chord. An easy way to remember this is because the first skip of the minor chord is small, and minor & small can mean a similar thing.

Learn 4 Chords – Quickly Play Hundreds of Songs! [EASY VERSION]

What’s up my piano friends! Today we’re going to go over 4 simple chords you can use even as a beginner to play hundreds of popular songs on piano. Now, this is the simple, easy piano version. You could learn this in anywhere from one day to a week. Literally most beginner’s I’ve taught have learned this thing in about 3 days!

We’re going to simplify it by using some Music Theory Hacks – Don’t worry, you won’t have to understand exactly how they work. Just like you don’t need to understand electricity to use a light switch, you can just use these chords without understanding any of the advanced theory behind them.

So first off, I’m going to show you the exact NOTES of the chords. Next (THIS IS IMPORTANT) we’re going to go over the SYSTEM to learning them. A lot of beginner piano players don’t drill in the chords properly, and they end up frustrated and annoyed when it comes out sloppy, or when they can’t get hands together. But we’re going to eliminate that frustration by drilling it in step-by-step and using some techniques and strategies meant to solidify it into your muscle memory (like “The Four Rhythms!”)

And lastly, we’re going to talk about how to use “Money Patterns” and “Money Variations” to take this pattern to the next level – basically, these are simple variations in rhythm and timing we can easily learn withOUT changing the notes themselves. And it can give you a great way to spice up this chord progression when you use it in actual songs.

Oh, and sidenote: learning this can also help you start to develop some basic improv skills… so it’s like a 2 for 1!

Make sure you download the cheat sheet here to get started:

I use this chord progression ALL the time when I compose. And guess what? So do a TON of other composers! Why?

Because it’s VERY versatile. As you’ll see in the video this one chord progression can be used to convey a number of different emotions (emotional, catchy, motivational, sad, ect). And it always just seems to have a “magical” quality to it.

Now… why do I recommend it for beginners? First off, this progression is used in a TON of songs since it’s so popular. That means by just learning ONE progression and really working it you already have a bunch of songs under your belt. So it’s a great “bang for your buck” in terms of the usefulness you get out of it for the practice time you put in.

Also, by making a few simple changes (chord variations and substitutions) you can “modify” this chord progression into a ton of similar-but-different chord progressions very easily. As you’ll see in the video, we’re going to come up with 5 other similar chord progressions VERY easily just by changing the order or slightly modifying one of the chords. But you’ll see more in the video.

Oh, and did I mention it’s also VERY easy to improvise over (even if you’re a beginner!) If you stick around to the end of the video you’ll see because of the way this progression’s set up, with a little very simple music theory we can make improvising a breeze. And then we can add a few “money notes” to spice things up even more.

Enjoy the video! If you liked this one, you’ll probably also like my video on the very simple Jazz chord progression that’s ALSO easy to improv over. Here’s the link to that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmYHB8IBpnA&index=15&list=PLXufPPxby9p66nomvGcar6eebbwVJCC_C

Building major and minor triads is so much fun once you understand the formula to create them on your own!

I use triads all the time to make beautiful harmony when I play some of my favorite songs.

Triads also make everything you play a sound so much cooler!

Here’s a breakdown of this lesson:

– Root Position Chords – 0:31
– Major Chord – 1:50
– Minor Chord – 2:02
– A fun exercise to try – 2:59
– Moving chords around – 3:38
– Final thoughts – 4:19

Moving your triads around the keyboard and changing them to major or minor gives you so many options for what to play.

Give it a try and let me know how playing your triads helps give ou more sounds to work with.

Example of songs that use these 4 chords: https://youtu.be/5pidokakU4I

In this beginner lesson, we look at a very common chord progression which uses four chords. These 4 chords are used in hundreds of songs!

In the key of C the chords are as follows: C, G, Am, F

Practice playing around with these chords to get them under your fingers. You should use different inversions and voicings around the piano.

Once you are comfortable with the chords, you can add some timing and rhythm. Start by playing each chord and count 4 beats for each one. Then you can begin adding in different patterns such as split chords and arpeggios.

Once you can do all of this, you can either sing the melody of songs over the top or work the melody out by ear, and play it in your right hand whilst playing the chords in your left.

Piano Chords: The Basics

Piano Learning No Comments »

Sign up for MORE awesome content at http://www.pianopig.com

Chords are built from scales. A triad is the most simple type of chord, it consists of 3 notes. To construct a triad you must take the 1st, 3rd and 5th. You could think of it as playing the root note, skipping the next note of the scale and playing the next one. Again, skip the following note and play the next one. These three notes create a triad. You can get major triads as well as minor triads (and more!).

You can also play these chords in different inversions. To do this, move whichever note is on the bottom of the chord to the top.

All the basic piano chords in one epic tutorial

Piano Learning No Comments »

Check out my book: http://www.billspianopages.com/how-to-really

EDIT: one chord I missed out was the minor ninth (-m9). After watching the tutorial you can probably work it out pretty easily: it’s the -m7 with an added major third.

Several people have asked me to make a tutorial revisiting all the basic piano chords – so here it is! There’s a little bit of theory, covering how piano chords are constructed, and how you can voice and invert them on the keyboard.

Most chords are built of thirds, and once you’ve figured out how to make major and minor thirds, and understood a couple of other basic intervals, it’s pretty easy to work out all the chords you need, even if you’re a relative beginner on the instrument.

As always, the secret to really mastering this stuff is to spend time sitting at the piano practising the techniques I talk about. One thing you could do is dig out a song book that has a vocal line with the chords written in. Practise reading the chords, and soon you won’t need the written piano part 🙂

Here are those timestamp links, by the way (hat tip, Ollie!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=6m0s – Basic major and minor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=7m30s – Dominant seventh (chords ending -7, e.g. G7, Eb7)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=8m30s – Minor seventh (chords ending -m7)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=9m45s – Sixth (-6 or -m6)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=11m50s – Ninth (-9) – NB, I don’t mention this in the tutorial but the minor ninth (-m9) is the -m7 with an added major third.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=14m25s – Suspended fourth (-sus or -sus4)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1i-cFx7__M&t=15m48s – Diminished and diminished seventh (-dim or -°; -dim7 or -°7)

There’s more on chords in my book: http://www.billspianopages.com/how-to-really

Learning piano chords and chord progressions can seem pretty daunting, but you can get a long way on the instrument by knowing just a few. In fact, you can play hundreds of songs if you learn just four easy piano chords.

In this tutorial I’m going to assume you’re a beginner and that, while you know the basic notes on the piano keyboard, you know little or nothing about chords, harmony and improvisation. I’ll teach you four chords and a simple progression in the key of C that you can adapt to help you play very many different songs. You can also use this easy tutorial to start learning some bits and pieces of piano improvisation, and as an intro to some of the other piano tutorials on my channel.

The chords I look at are C, F, G and A minor. The first thing I explain is the importance of being able to play these chords in many different voicings and inversions – the piano offers hundreds of different ways of playing simple chords, and it’s important that you really get comfortable with find chord shapes quickly on the keyboard.

From there we take a simple chord progression and begin to play it to time, starting with just single chords and moving on to slightly more complex, but easy piano comps. We also look at ways that you can start improvising on the chords to create more interesting effects, and also mention playing in different keys and learning how to pick out melody at the keyboard.

A really important point that I make several times is that you have to practise this pretty hard – learning piano isn’t easy, and it’s really crucial that you give your brain time to adjust to the complex stuff you’re asking it to do. However, with a few hours or days of practice it shouldn’t take long for you to get pretty reasonable at playing chords on the piano. It’s all about determination and sticking to it!

If you’ve enjoyed this tutorial you might also like my book, How To Really Play The Piano – there’s a link at the top of this description.
